Enable Twitter’s revamped timeline
We know that, Twitter has made several changes to its service over the years and has gradually focused more on customization and improved multimedia experience. While real time reverse-chronological Timeline has remained its main USP, it has made a few tweaks such as the “while you were away” feature that displays top tweets that you may have missed when open Twitter after a while. Now, Twitter is making more changes to the Timeline to show the “best tweets from people you follow”.
How it works ?
This new timeline feature is basically an expansion of the “while you were away” feature. So, when you open the app after being away for a while, Twitter will show you the tweets that “you are most likely to care about” at the top of the timeline. So, if you have opened Twitter after a day, you will get to see highlights of the day. Number of tweets shown is likely to depend on frequency of your visit to Twitter. Lesser the frequency, higher the number of tweets.
Twitter will show you these tweets in recent and reverse chronological order, while rest of the tweets will appear underneath, which will also be in reverse chronological order. Just in case you want to see all the latest tweets, you need to pull to refresh as you do for usual refreshing the timeline.
How to enable/disable it ?
Actually, the feature is disabled by default and users need to manually switch it on. They have the option to switch it off in the future. Desktop users need to log in to their account on twitter.com and visit Account settings page. Under the Content, click on Timeline, and toggle the box next to Show me the best tweets first.
For iOS users
Twitter for iOS users need to tap on their profile, tap the gear icon, and choose Settings. Tap on the account > Timeline personalization. Tap next to Show me the best Tweets first. You can also choose the feature for your different Twitter accounts.
Similarly, Twitter for Android users need to tap the overflow icon on their profile, tap settings > Timeline > check/uncheck the Show me the best Tweets first.
Twitter will no longer show live Timeline?
It is highly unlikely the service will change the live Timeline model, which has been the main USP for years, and makes it different from the likes of Facebook and Google News.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said:
Twitter is live. Twitter is real-time. Twitter is about who and what you follow. And Twitter is here to stay! By becoming more Twitter-y. Look at ‘while you were away’ at the top of your TL. Tweets you missed from people you follow. Pull to refresh to go back to real-time.”
I want you all to know we’re always listening. We never planned to reorder timelines next week. I love real-time. We love the live stream. It’s us. And we’re going to continue to refine it to make Twitter feel more, not less, live!.”
Twitter will be rolling out the feature gradually in coming weeks. You will receive a notification for the same in your timeline.
