Google’s Self-Driving Car Got The Green Light From Government
The robots aren’t coming. The robots are here. As Google’s Self-Driving Car got the green light from government.
In November, Google submitted a design to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) for a self-driving car that did not include a steering wheel. Google asked the NHTSA to change the legal definition of the driver from whoever to whatever. This would allow the legal definition of a driver to be a computer as opposed to a human.
The NHTSA responded and said that they are open to making this change. According to NHTSA-
‘Google’expresses concern that providing human occupants of the vehicle with mechanisms to control things like steering, acceleration, braking… could be detrimental to safety because the human occupants could attempt to override the (self-driving system’s) decisions.”
They further added- We don’t know that self-driving cars would be any safer than manually driven cars in real-life situations. We don’t even know that the software driving these cars would even be bug-free. A program locking up when you’re typing something up in Word is one thing; the worst that will happen is that you lose some of your work. Imagine the software in this contraption locking up when you’re traveling 60 mph down the highway, trapped in a steel coffin.
Yet we seem to be getting ready to put our lives into the hands of unproven, largely untested software because the technology is new and glitzy and because Google is essentially saying “Trust us; we know what’s best for you”.
It’s a mistake, and I fear that people may be hurt before we finally learn to have healthy skepticism about technological innovation.
But after all mess finally, it’s coming our say. So cheer up guys. Hope to see these tiny robots running across the streets very soon.
That’s all from this. Keep visiting for more Tech Updates.
